About the Kyoto Media Support Center
The unique culture of Japan’s ancient capital is a harmonious blend of broadly diverse elements. These include beautiful nature blessed with deep blue mountains and clear water, a long history stretching back more than 1,200 years, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, some of which have been registered as World Heritage sites, traditional rituals and performing arts such as the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, noh and kyogen theater, and kodo, or incense burning, as well as religious traditions that form the foundation of Kyoto culture. Another attractive feature of this ancient place is that the bearers of its history, culture, and tradition live and work in all parts of the city.
Kyoto is also a center for filmmaking. It was the venue for Japan’s first film screening in 1897 and was once known as “the Hollywood of the East.”
The Kyoto Media Support Center was established by the Kyoto City government to serve as a point of contact to provide comprehensive filming support in the city. It aims to promote film culture and the film industry as well as tourism in Kyoto to vitalize the city’s economy while helping filmmakers to convey the attractive features of this ancient city to Japan and the world.
