Sites Connected with the Birth of Ushiwakamaru (Ushiwakamaru’s Birthing Bath Well/Afterbirth Mound)
Born in 1159, Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune was the half-brother of Minamoto-no-Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate. Known as Ushiwakamaru as a child, he distinguished himself in the many battles fought at the end of the Heian period, during the Genpei War.
This site is home to the well that legend says was used to bathe the new-born Ushiwakamaru, along with a stone tablet describing it. Under the pine tree is the Afterbirth Mound, where Ushiwakamaru’s afterbirth is said to have been buried. Records show that until the end of the Edo period, this was home to the Ushiwakamaru Ubuyu Daibenzaitennyo-sha shrine.
Nearby are the remains of another well that is also believed to have been used for Ushiwakamaru’s first bath.
