Junenji Temple

This is a temple belonging to the Seizan Sect of “Pure Land” Buddhism. It was built in 1431 when Saint Shinna, prince of the Emperor Gokameyama, founded a small temple following the conversion of Yoshinori Ashikaga, the sixth shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. In 1591, the temple was transferred to its present location by Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
This temple is characterized by its modern-style temple building constructed in 1993 by a priest of the Isshinji Temple (Osaka City), who is also known as an architect. A seated Amidanyorai statue, which according to tradition dates back to the Heian Period (794-1192) and was formerly at the old Ungoji Temple of Higashiyama, is enshrined here.
As for the treasure of the temple, Junenji owns items such as a picture scroll of Bukkigun, representing Buddha’s Great War against demonus in hell (designated as part of Japaneseis important cultural assets) created during the Muromachi Period.
The grave of Yoshinori Ashikaga is located inside the temple grounds.
